HDS Field Guidance · Edition 1.0

Install the material.
Protect the design.

The online companion to the HDS Field Installation Guide for ultra-thin flexible and illuminated natural stone. Use this page for the sequence; use the downloadable guide for field details and closeout records.

Document hierarchy

One guide. Two useful formats.

This webpage is the quick planning overview. The downloadable HDS Field Installation Guide is the controlling HDS field document. Project drawings, current product data, manufacturer instructions, applicable code and licensed-trade requirements always take precedence.

Before work begins

Confirm. Mock up. Approve.

Natural variation is part of real stone. Build a representative mockup with the actual stone, substrate, adhesive, joints, finish and lighting. Obtain approval before production installation.

System 01

Flexible stone veneer

Coordinate the stone, backing, substrate, adhesive, joints, edges and exposure as one finish assembly.

System 02

Illuminated natural stone

Coordinate stone transmission, diffusion, lighting, frame, wiring, thermal management and service access.

Hold point

Written mockup approval

Approve color, seams, corners, bond, finish, cleaning and—when applicable—light quality before continuing.

Typical tools and materials
  • Tape measure, pencil, square, level and templates
  • Cutting and drilling equipment approved for the selected HDS product
  • Dust extraction and job-appropriate personal protection
  • Primer, adhesive, grout and sealer approved for the complete assembly
  • Notched trowel, clean pressure roller, spacers and lint-free cloths
  • Specified edge, corner and movement-joint components
Stop-work conditions

Pause before a small issue becomes permanent.

Field sequence

Six controlled steps

Do not skip from delivery directly to bonding. The approved composition, substrate and complete assembly determine the result.

01

Verify the assembly

Confirm the delivered stone, backing, finish and intended exposure. Determine whether the work is non-illuminated veneer or a translucent system. Review current product, adhesive, substrate and project documents before opening material.

02

Prepare the substrate

The receiving surface must be flat, sound, dry, stable and free of dust, oil, wax, release agents and weak coatings. Verify moisture, cure time, movement and adhesion. Flexible stone follows the plane beneath it.

03

Dry-layout the composition

Arrange every sheet before bonding. Review tone, movement, vein direction, seams, outlets, corners and lighting alignment. Number the backs and photograph the approved sequence.

04

Measure and fabricate

Mark the backing, support the sheet completely and test the full cutting or drilling method on a remnant. Control dust, vibration, heat and scratching. Respect device clearances and project details.

05

Bond and press

Use only an adhesive approved for the stone, backing, substrate and exposure. Work within its open time, create continuous contact and press from the center outward. Verify coverage while the adhesive is fresh.

06

Finish, cure and inspect

Complete joints, trims, corners and surface treatment as approved. Remove fresh residue safely and protect the installation for the full product-specific cure. Inspect the work before handover.

Substrate & movement

Build on a sound surface.

Correct irregularities before installation and honor required structural, control, expansion and perimeter joints. Flexible stone is not a crack-isolation or waterproofing membrane.

Adhesive & coverage

Match the chemistry.

Interior, wet, exterior and translucent applications may require different products. Verify compatibility, open time, service temperature, moisture resistance and visibility through the stone. Avoid blobs, trapped air and dry edge bands.

Joints, edges & corners

Approve every detail.

Butt joints, expressed joints, flexible filled joints, profiles, edge-to-edge corners and miters create different results. Complete a sample of every unique termination before production work.

Wet, exterior & heat

Review the full enclosure.

Waterproofing, drainage, flashing, vapor control, clearances and movement are separate systems. Confirm exposure, fire and code requirements with current project documentation.

System 02

Design the light and stone together.

A luminous feature is an engineered assembly—not stone placed over a lamp. HDS should review the panel rhythm, translucency, light quality, drivers, ventilation and future service access before fabrication.

Start a guided project
  1. 01Mock up at full size. Use the actual stone, LED system, spacing, diffusion and controls.
  2. 02Map transmission. Review fissures, patching, overlaps, seams and support shadows.
  3. 03Control the light. Resolve hotspots, banding, color shift, glare and edge leakage.
  4. 04Plan service. Keep drivers, dimmers, wiring and replaceable components accessible.
  5. 05Coordinate licensed trades. Electrical, structural, fire and enclosure details require the appropriate professionals.
Finishing & care

Test the finish. Respect the cure.

Test sealers, cleaners, tapes and finishing methods on actual project material. Approve any change in color, sheen or texture before proceeding.

Do not grout, seal, energize lighting, wash, load or release the area until every component reaches its required product-specific cure.

Closeout

Inspect. Document. Care.
